FIA Awards Mercedes-Benz E320 CDI For Record Drive

The Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile, or
simply, the FIA,
has recently awarded Mercedes-Benz for their record 100,000 mile
drive that took place earlier this year.

The record drive launched the career of the new Mercedes V6 CDI
diesel engine, which replaced the previous five and six-cylinder in

line engines in the summer of 2005. After mounting the new
165kW/224
hp engine in three standard E320 CDI models, drivers covered
distances of 100,000 kilometers (average speed: 140.37mph), 50,000

miles (average speed: 140.09mph) and 100,000 miles (average speed:

139.70) in world record time.

Despite the extreme testing conditions, the vehicles' diesel
particulate filters all completed their tests without needing any
maintenance, proving once and for all the dependability of
Mercedes'
diesel exhaust technology.

Dr. Michael Kramer, head of development for the C-Class, CLS-Class

and E-Class models, had this to say: "I am very pleased about the

award, which I accept on behalf of the young 'Laredo-Go team.' The

key to our success was in the team spirit and quality of our
products."

According to Max Mosley, president of the FIA: "This world record
is
a great achievement by everybody involved and demonstrates the
extraordinary reliability and very high average speed of modern
diesel engined cars. I think by this record it is shown how highly

developed the Mercedes-Benz diesel technology is.

OFFICIAL PRESS RELEASE

FIA award for E 320 CDI world record drive

Stuttgart, Dec 12, 2005

The FIA has rewarded Mercedes-Benz for its unique achievement in
the
record 100,000 mile drive earlier this year. On 9th December, 2005,

Dr. Michael Krämer, Head of Development for the C-Class,
CLS-Class
and E-Class models at the Mercedes Car Group, accepted the award
from
FIA President Max Mosley, giving credit to the young team of 30
drivers who took part in the record drive in Laredo, Texas with
three
standard model E 320 CDI vehicles.

The world records launched the career of the new Mercedes-Benz V6
CDI
diesel engine, which replaced the previous five and six-cylinder
in-
line engines in the summer of 2005. The 165 kW/224 hp engine
mounted
in three standard E 320 CDI models, covered distances of 100,000
kilometres (average speed: 225,903 km/h), 50,000 miles (225,456
km/h)
and 100,000 miles (224,823 km/h) in world record time.
Diesel vehicles also achieved further records in addition to the
impressive per-formance at the record drive, which was held on a
high
speed test track in Laredo, USA. Despite the extreme conditions,
the
maintenance-free diesel particulate fil-ters weathered the entire
record distance without a single problem - further proof of the
dependability and longevity of this diesel exhaust technology. Dr.

Michael Krämer: I am very pleased about the award,
which I accept on
behalf of the young Laredo-Go team. The key to our
success was in
the team spirit and qual-ity of our products.

FIA President Max Mosley:This world record is a great
achievement by
everybody involved and demonstrates the extraordinary reliability
and
very high average speed of modern diesel engined cars. I think by
this record it is shown how highly developed the Mercedes-Benz
diesel
technology is.
